CONCEPT

FOMO: why you buy at exactly the wrong moment

The fear of missing out makes you enter late. The emotion that has cost you money without you noticing.

WHAT IT IS

FOMO

fear of missing out

WHEN

at the highs

when everything rises

ANTIDOTE

a plan

set in the cold

THE IDEA

Late entry

↑ FOMO gets you in once the move is already done

FOMO isn't foolish: it's a survival instinct. Seeing others win fires the same brain circuit as hunger. The problem is that in markets that instinct pushes you to buy high.

THE RULE

TO GET IT

80%

80%

▼ of the move has usually passed by the time you finally get in

The headline pushing you to buy is proof you're already late: if it's in the news, the smart money is already inside.

Illustrative figure: by the time FOMO becomes irresistible, most of the move has usually already happened.

SMART MONEY
Investors who position before the news becomes public.
ILLUSTRATIVE
A round number to explain the idea, not an exact market figure.

QUOTE

AUTHORITY

The price of feeling smart

Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.
John Maynard Keynes · Economist

The sense of certainty peaks exactly when the risk does too. That's the trap.

IRRATIONAL
When price drifts from what things are worth on pure emotion.
SOLVENT
Having enough money to hold on without being forced to sell.

THE CURVE

HOW IT FEELS

Where the FOMO buyer tends to buy

CALMINTERESTEUPHORIAHANGOVER

FOMO shows up on the steep part and gets you in near the peak. The calm, where the opportunity was, made no headlines.

Illustrative curve: the emotion peaks near the top, right before the hangover.

TOP
The highest point before price turns around.
HANGOVER
The drop that follows euphoria once the last buyer is in.

DEFENSE

4 RULES

Four ways to invest without letting FOMO decide

  1. DECIDE IN THE COLD

Set in advance what you'd buy and at what price. If the plan didn't include it, urgency is not a reason.

  2. BUY IN TRANCHES

Splitting the entry into several buys removes pressure: you neither nail the bottom nor eat the whole top.

  3. DISTRUST THE HEADLINE

If an idea is already on the front page and on everyone's lips, the price most likely already reflects it.

  4. MEASURE THE WORST CASE

Before you enter, ask how much you can stand to lose. If the answer keeps you up at night, cut the size.

It isn't about never buying: it's about letting your plan decide, not your adrenaline.

TRANCHES
Investing in several buys spread over time, not all at once.
SIZE
How much money you put in an idea; the first lever of risk.

WHERE IT COMES FROM

THE MIX

What really drives a FOMO buy

FEAR OF MISSING OUT55%

Seeing others win hurts more than losing yourself

FOLLOWING THE HERD30%

If everyone buys, it feels safe

YOUR OWN ANALYSIS15%

The part that should lead and barely weighs

When analysis is only 15% of the decision, you aren't investing: you're reacting.

In a FOMO decision, analysis is the smallest part. Emotion dominates.

HERD
The bias of copying what others do instead of thinking for yourself.
BIAS
A mental shortcut that distorts a decision without you noticing.

EXAMPLES

TO ILLUSTRATE

Five assets that teach what FOMO is

QQQ~650 tech maniasThe tech index: every big rally draws buyers late, in the euphoria.
ARKK~60 2021 cycleInnovation fund: rose on the story and crashed once the herd left.
GLD~380 safe havenGold: rises when fear spreads; FOMO exists toward 'safety' too.
SOXX~295 chips/AISemis: the fashionable sector; the best FOMO magnet when AI is the headline.
BIL~100 boringT-bills: give nobody FOMO, and that's why they rarely ruin you.

Rounded prices as examples. The lesson isn't in the price, it's in the story.

ETF
A listed basket that tracks an index or an investment theme.
INNOVATION
High-growth, high-risk companies; a classic FOMO magnet.
