SENTIMENT

Nobody's afraid, and that's the odd part

Records on the Dow, the S&P a step away and the VIX at 16. Total calm, one day before the jobs report.

THE NUMBER

60

the fear and greed index, in the greed zone

The market's emotional gauge reads 60 (greed) and the VIX hovers near 16, a level of near-total calm. All of this right before Friday's jobs report. Research house Saxo sums it up: the records extend while hedges quietly build underneath.

DATA

ZOOM

15.92

15.92

near the year's lows

A VIX at 16 is like a house with the doors open: comfortable while nothing happens, costly the day something does.

A low VIX means almost nobody expects a shock. And protection is cheap exactly when it's worth buying.

VIX
Expected 30-day S&P 500 volatility. It rises when fear returns.
LOWS
The lowest levels of a period. On the VIX, a sign of calm.

TAKE

AUTHORITY

Records extend, hedges build

The records extend, but underneath them the hedges are building.
Saxo Bank · Options Desk · Note from August 5

This is the tell: institutional money is buying cheap protection while retail only watches the price climb.

HEDGE
Protection against declines, usually via put options.
INSTITUTIONAL
The big money: funds, banks, asset managers.
RETAIL
The individual investor trading their own capital.

Aside from one brief scare, fear has stayed pinned for months. Prolonged calm is comfortable, until it isn't.

Twelve months of the fear index. The shape is illustrative, but today's level (~16) is real: calm near the lows.

VIX
Index of expected S&P 500 volatility.
ALERT
A VIX above 20 usually marks the shift from calm to nerves.

TWO CAMPS

WHO DOES WHAT

Retail celebrates, the big money hedges

RETAIL

Only sees the price climb

  • Buys at highs because everything is rising and missing out feels scary.
  • Ignores the cheap volatility: assumes calm is the normal state.
  • Gets in late and unhedged right before the key data lands.

INSTITUTIONAL

Buys protection while it's cheap

  • Uses the low VIX to hedge the portfolio almost for free.
  • Keeps exposure but with a net underneath in case the data misses.
  • Doesn't predict the future: it insures against it at low cost.

In the same market at record highs, two kinds of investor are doing opposite things. Worth knowing which one you are.

FOMO
Fear of missing out. It pushes people to buy late and expensive.
PUT
An option that gains value if the market falls. The classic hedge.

GREED
Elevated market optimism. The opposite extreme of panic.
CUT
A reduction in the Fed's official interest rate.
