WEEKLY CLOSEThe high everyone is leaving

THE WEEK
$166bn
flight into cash in a single week
The index closed near record highs, but under the surface the picture turned defensive: around $166 billion moved into cash and money market funds in just seven days, the biggest flight into cash since 2020. That money rarely returns to stocks until rate cuts begin.
WEEK'S STAT
ZOOM IN$166bn
$166bn
▲ biggest move into cash since 2020
When money runs for safety while the index is still at highs, the market is saying one thing with its price and another with its feet.
In one week, investors moved that much into cash and money market funds. It is the biggest defensive flow since 2020, the year of the covid shock.
- CASH
- — Money kept out of stocks, parked in liquidity or short debt.
- DEFENSIVE FLOW
- — Capital moving into safe assets out of fear of risk.
THE READ
THE NUANCEA high is not the same as strength
“An index at highs while money runs into cash is not strength: it is a handful of stocks holding up the picture, while most have already stepped off the boat.”
An index can set records while most of its stocks are already falling. The number can mislead.
- HIGH
- — The peak level an index or a stock reaches.
- INDEX
- — A weighted average of many stocks, like the S&P 500.
THE WEEK
5 SESSIONSThe week that bounced, but barely
The index tagged the resistance zone midweek, dropped on Thursday's scare, and Friday recovered only part of it. A bounce that hangs on a few names.
The index across the five sessions. On Thursday an OpenAI revenue scare sank tech; on Friday it bounced, without recovering the loss.
- RESISTANCE
- — A price level where an advance tends to stall.
- BOUNCE
- — A partial recovery in price after a drop.
NEXT WEEK
3 KEYSThree things to watch next week
WEDNESDAY'S CPI
The October 14 inflation report is the pivot of the week. Recent price data around the world ran hot, so the market arrives with its nerves on edge.
WHETHER BREADTH WIDENS
The index is rising on very few stocks. If more sectors join the move, the rally gains health. If it keeps hanging on four names, that is a late-cycle signal.
WHETHER THE BOND EASES BELOW 5%
The 10-year yield above 5% is the anchor holding stocks back. Until it drops below that, the equity market trades with a weight on top of it.
The close left three open questions. These start to get answered Monday through Friday.
- CPI
- — Consumer Price Index. It measures inflation.
- BREADTH
- — How many stocks actually take part in the advance.
- YIELD
- — What a bond pays per year at its current price.
BREAKDOWN
WHO HOLDS THE HIGHWho made the highs of recent weeks
One of only two sectors at new highs
The other prop under the index high
Industrials, real estate and financials, in the red
Illustrative weights, not measured: they show the idea. An index at highs held up by two sectors is a thin market, not a strong one.
Illustrative split to frame the picture: since the August high, almost all the push came from two sectors.
- SECTOR
- — A group of companies in the same business, like energy or banks.
- THIN MARKET
- — When few stocks rise and most are left behind.
