The most violent bounce is rarely the bottom

After the worst week since June, futures are up sharply. The catch: they are up on oversold conditions, not good news.

Friday close, below the 7,700 support

The S&P 500 lost the 7,700 level and closed at 7,659. Overnight it is bouncing toward 7,754 in futures, but still inside the big 7,600-7,650 support zone it had bounced from before.

THE STREAK

8 sessions

▼ semis post their worst streak since 2006

It is not that the whole market is sinking: it is that the group that led all year is the one now paying the bill.

Eight straight down sessions in semiconductors is the longest losing streak since 2006. The pain is concentrated at the heart of the AI trade.

SEMIS
— Semiconductors: the chips that power AI. The hottest sector of the cycle.
STREAK
— A run of sessions in the same direction. Eight down in a row is rare.

FLOWS

The pain is concentrated, not spread out

“The damage lives in the AI trade, not the whole index: the S&P ex-AI beat the index by 475 basis points in a single week.”
Ronfy Analysis · Editorial · on Goldman Research data

Goldman's basket pitting AI winners against AI losers fell 12% in 5 sessions. The rest of the market held up far better.

BASKET
— A group of stocks tracked together to gauge one specific theme.
EX-AI
— The index with the big artificial-intelligence names stripped out.

It is bouncing inside the big 7,600-7,650 support. Calling it a bottom needs confirmation, not one green day.

The S&P 500 kept losing altitude until it broke 7,700 on Friday. The final leg up is today's futures: a bounce, still unconfirmed.

SUPPORT
— A price zone where buyers tend to step in and slow the fall.
CONFIRM
— The move holding for several sessions, not just one isolated candle.

CHECKLIST

BOUNCE OR BOTTOM

Three signs this is still a bounce, not a turn

  1. EUROPE ISN'T BUYING IT

While US futures rise, European markets open in the red. A healthy turn tends to be global, not confined to one time zone.

  2. THE SYSTEMATICS ARE LURKING

Trend-following funds (CTAs) are heavily long and would start selling near 7,624. The bounce sits just points away from triggering automatic selling.

  3. AI CREDIT KEEPS CRACKING

AI infrastructure bonds issued at 9.7% now trade at a 15% yield. The underlying problem isn't fixed just because stocks bounce for a day.

A real bottom shows up with breadth and with fear easing. Today all three are missing.

BREADTH
— How many stocks actually rise, not just the big index names.
CTA
— Funds that buy or sell automatically by following the trend.

Illustrative split: the punishment concentrated in the AI block; the rest of the market held up much better.

HYPERSCALER
— A cloud giant building the data centers that run AI.
AI OPTICS
— Optical-component makers that wire those data centers together.

WATCHLIST

5 KEY ETFs

Five thermometers for the bounce

SOXX245▼ -2.1%Semis. The most punished group; its bounce would show if AI fear is truly easing.
QQQ640▲ +1.2%Nasdaq 100. Bouncing with futures, but led by only a few names.
SPY766▲ +0.6%S&P 500. Key tell: holding above 7,780 on the index would be a signal.
RSP185▲ +0.3%Equal-weight S&P. Measures breadth: if it barely rises, the bounce is narrow.
SHV110→ +0.0%Short-term T-bills. The quiet refuge while direction sorts itself out.

Each one measures a different leg of the move: if the bounce is healthy, they should move together.

ETF
— A listed basket that tracks an index or sector; trades like a single stock.
EQUAL-WEIGHT
— An index where every company counts the same, not by size.
