The rebound standing on one leg

Two green days for the index. But the equal-weight market went flat. When the index climbs and the troops don't, something is off.

THE NUMBER

~0%

the equal-weight, flat after two up days for the index

The equal-weight S&P (RSP) gives all 500 companies the same weight. Its going flat while the standard index rose means a handful of mega-caps carried the move, not the market.

It looks like a big wave from the shore, but it only wets four people's feet. The rest of the beach stays dry.

The equal-weight going flat across two up sessions is proof the rebound has no breadth behind it.

The equal-weight S&P 500 ETF: every company weighted the same.

QUOTE

AUTHORITY

The bounce was born at the 200-day

A violent bounce off the long-term average is normal inside a downleg. It isn't a new trend until breadth confirms it.
Ronfy Analysis · Editorial

The turn happened right on the Nasdaq's 200-day moving average: an expected technical bounce, not a trend change.

MA200
200-session moving average: a gauge of the underlying trend.
DOWNLEG
A falling phase that can still contain technical bounces.

A real bounce, but into soft resistance (7,470-7,500) and with no breadth. Strong support sits below, at 7,300.

The index fell hard on Fed day and bounced right on its long-term average. Now it tests resistance.

RESISTANCE
A level where price tends to stall on the way up.
SUPPORT
A level where price tends to stall on the way down.

WHY IT MATTERS

THREE FLAGS

Three reasons not to trust this bounce

  1. FLAT BREADTH

The equal-weight went flat over two days. A healthy rebound is led by hundreds of stocks, not four.

  2. IT'S SHORT-COVERING

Much of the move is bears buying back to close, not convinced new money stepping in to buy.

  3. NARROW LEADERSHIP

AI mega-caps and semis carried the move. If those four names cough, the whole index feels it.

The bounce isn't fake: it's fragile until these three things change.

SHORT-COVERING
Bears buying back to close their bet, pushing price up.
LEADERSHIP
The sectors or stocks pulling the index in a move.

THE OTHER ~490A flat contribution to the whole20%

When 80% of the push comes from two groups, the index depends on them. Apparent diversification, real concentration.

Rough split of the push: almost all of it came from a narrow group, not the broad market.

SOX

CONCENTRATION
A few firms decide the whole index's move.
