CONCEPT

Book value and P/B: what a company is worth if it closes tomorrow

The stock price is what the market pays. Book value is what would be left if you sold everything and paid off the debts.

BOOK VALUE

assets - debts

what's 'left'

KEY RATIO

P/B

price / book

BEST FIT

THE IDEA

P/B

a stock's price divided by its book value

If a company is worth 100 in book value and trades at 150, its P/B is 1.5x. You pay 1.5 dollars for every dollar of net assets. The number tells you at a glance whether you're buying cheap or dear versus what the company owns.

THE RULE

SIMPLE RULE

1.0x

1.0x

the line: price = book value

Above 1, the market pays more than the company owns (it believes in the future). Below 1, it pays less (a bargain, or an alarm).

A P/B of 1 means the price equals book value. It's the line that separates a premium from a discount.

PREMIUM
— When the market pays above book value.
DISCOUNT
— When the market pays below book value.

IDEA

TO GRASP IT

Book value is the floor, not the ceiling

“Book value doesn't tell you what a company is worth. It tells you how much tangible backing sits under the price you're being asked to pay.”
Ronfy Analysis · Editorial

Book value is rarely the fair price, but it's an anchor: it tells you how much real backing sits under the stock.

ANCHOR
— A reference point that frames your judgment when valuing something.
TANGIBLE
— What you can count and sell: cash, loans, buildings, equipment.

EXAMPLE

HOW IT GROWS

A book value that grows year after year

YEAR 0 · 10 per shareYEAR 0 · 10 per shareTODAY · 22 per shareTODAY · 22 per share
YEAR 0YEAR 2YEAR 4YEAR 6TODAY

A growing book is a sign of health: the company is compounding value for shareholders. A flat or falling book, the opposite.

An illustrative curve, not a real company. When a firm reinvests its profits, its book value per share rises over time.

REINVEST
— Using profit to grow the company instead of paying it all out.
PER SHARE
— The value split across each share outstanding.

KEYS

FOUR IDEAS

What P/B tells you (and what it doesn't)

  1. WHAT BOOK VALUE IS

Everything the company owns minus its debts. It's the accounting snapshot of the real backing under the stock.

  2. P/B BELOW 1

The market pays less than the net assets. It can be a bargain, or a signal the market thinks those assets are worth less than the books claim.

  3. PERFECT FOR BANKS

A bank's assets are almost all financial (loans, bonds, cash), easy to put a number on. That's why P/B is the go-to metric for valuing them.

  4. WHERE IT FAILS

For brands, software or pharma, the value sits off the balance sheet (patents, brand, talent). There, P/B misleads: a sky-high P/B doesn't mean 'expensive'.

One metric is never enough, but P/B is a powerful first filter, especially in certain sectors.

BALANCE SHEET
— The accounting statement listing assets, debts and equity.
INTANGIBLE
— Value with no physical form: brand, patents, software, reputation.

INSIDE

EXAMPLE

A bank inside out: what its balance sheet is made of

LOANS MADE: 60%SECURITIES & BONDS: 25%CASH & LIQUIDITY: 15%ASSETS100%
LOANS MADEMortgages, cards, businesses60%
SECURITIES & BONDSBonds and holdings25%
CASH & LIQUIDITYMoney on hand15%

When almost everything you own can be marked to a price, book value leaves little to the imagination. That's why it works for banks.

An illustrative split. In a bank, almost all the assets are financial, which is why its book value is so 'real'.

LIQUIDITY
— Money available right now, without having to sell anything.
SECURITIES
— Bonds and stocks the firm holds in its portfolio.

WATCHLIST

TO SEE IT

Where P/B really matters

XLF~48→ approxUS financials. The sector where P/B rules: they tend to trade near 1-2x book.
KRE~60→ approxRegional banks. They hover near 1x book; below that, the market smells bad loans.
IVE~190→ approxS&P 500 Value. A 'value' index overweights firms with a low P/B.
BRK.B~470→ approxBerkshire. Buffett uses book value growth as a yardstick.

Example tickers to see the concept in the real world. Levels are approximate, no day prices.

ETF
— A listed basket that bundles many stocks of one theme or sector.
VALUE
— An investing style that seeks stocks cheap relative to their fundamentals.
