China puts a scare into memory

CXMT claims a denser DRAM design that will reach servers this year. The supercycle's oligopoly shakes for the first time.

CXMT (ChangXin Memory) says it has advanced a denser memory design set to reach servers this year. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron all fell; the Kospi tripped a circuit breaker, its first in almost two months.

It isn't just one stock. The fear is that if China makes cheap advanced memory, prices stop rising and the supercycle ends.

In a three-player business, a fourth claiming it is arriving with better tech scares the whole sector at once.

SUPERCYCLE
— A long phase of rising prices as demand outruns supply.
CAPACITY
— How much memory the sector can make; more supply pressures prices.

QUOTE

THE READ

A clear trigger for the selloff

“China doesn't need to win share tomorrow. It only needs the market to doubt that these three will keep setting prices on their own.”
Ronfy Analysis · Editorial

The market had spent months paying for the memory supercycle as if nothing could break it. Today the first 'what if' arrived.

MARKET SHARE
— The percentage of total sales a company controls.
PRICING POWER
— The ability to raise prices without losing customers.

While the broad index barely moved, memory collapsed. The hit was sector-specific, not market-wide.

TWO THESES

BULL vs BEAR

Supercycle intact, or a crack in the wall

BULL CASE

The supercycle holds

  • AI memory demand is growing faster than supply.
  • China is still years behind on the most advanced nodes.
  • Announcing isn't shipping at volume or at commercial yield.

BEAR CASE

China breaks the oligopoly

  • Three firms set prices; a fourth changes the balance.
  • If China floods the mid-range, prices stop climbing.
  • The market pays for the supercycle as if it were forever. It isn't.

The same news supports two opposite reads. Which one you believe decides the whole sector.

NODE
— The fineness of the manufacturing process; finer is more advanced and harder.
YIELD
— The share of chips that come out good; low yield makes everything pricier.

Indicative split. Today's 3% is exactly what the market fears will grow.

An approximate split of the market. Three names control almost all of it, which is why a fourth scares it so much.

BARRIER TO ENTRY
